I consider very important, to understand what we read, being able to identify the function a certain word has in a sentence. These two pages may be of help. 

It is not a question knowing and being able to give a brilliant definition of what a tense, a gerung, a present participle or a subordinate clause is, but just knowing the 8/9 basic ones that surely will help you to make less mistakes.
